If you do a search for the term Marijuana cash crop you will get a huge listing of articles in Google mostly dating back to 2006 and all pointing to the state of USA, California. California has been the number one producer of Marijuana and although it also produces excellent wine from grape crop there seems to be a huge affinity towards the cultivation of Marijuana by farmers therefore making it the widely grown in the state.
Well lets break down the statement “Marijuana number one cash crop” and concentrate on the word “cash crop” and compare it to the cost of producing wine. The ease at which Marijuana can be grown and the resources needed to grow it are at such a mimimum that when the final product (marijuana bud) hits the market the profits are huge. Wine being in liquid form requires bigger costs in transportation compared to marijuana being a solid, lighter and easier to distribute – no need to bottle. It is no wonder that the cultivation of marijuana is so lucrative and why so many people are growing it.
A comparison of all the top cash crops grown in the USA in Jon Gettman’s 2006 report reveal the marijuana is not only the biggest money maker in California but the entire USA taking number one spot and wheat being at number 2.
